Description

The GR131 Tenerife

Tenerife, is the fourth island of the GR131. Within 5 days you walk 90 km south in Tenerife, crossing the Teide Natural Park and passing El Teide. With an impressive height of 3718 meters, it is the highest volcano of the islands! La Gomera is the fifth island of the GR131. There you walk 40 km from east to west within 3 days, crossing the Garajonay Natural Park. It is a beautiful hike with a lot of variety. You pass farmlands, forests with conifers, eucalyptus and laurel trees and various lava landscapes. You reach an altitude of 2,425 meters on Tenerife and 1,478 meters on La Gomera, where you hardly meet anyone. The 130 kilometers and the challenging landscape with many altimeters make this a tour for experienced hikers, with sure footedness and a good condition!

The GR131 La Gomera

On La Gomera you will arrive at the port of the small town of San Sebastian. From there you walk up towards the Garajonay Natural Park with a magnificent view of Tenerife with El Teide above the clouds. A special feature of the park is the fog, which is more present in the winter than in the summer. In the center of the park is an ancient laurel forest.
On La Gomera you have the so-called whistling language. The Silbo Gomero (Gomeran flute) is a whistling language “spoken” by some inhabitants of the Canary Island of La Gomera. The language is used to communicate through the deep valleys (barrancos) that are found all over the island.

The 12-day trip consists of carefully selected accommodations, based on a double room, and usually a private bathroom, with breakfast. Of course there is the possibility to get a single room for a supplement.

  • Trekking along special views
  • Maximum 8 persons
  • Alto the Jarajonay
  • special valleys
  • Special overnight stays
  • Hiking island par excellence
  • The whistle  on La Gomera
  • El Teide
  • Away from the crowd

1| Arrival Tenerife
Transfer from the airport to the first accommodation in La Esperanza on Tenerife, where you will stay for two nights.

2| La Esperanza – El Gaitero
After a hearty breakfast you start the walking week. The first stage of the GR131 has a total distance of 16 km. A gradually ascending road, with a vicious last bit. You walk slowly up through the forest, protected from the wind. The trip mostly goes through the woods, lots of shade and few views so far. You will be taken back to the accommodation.

Distance: 16 km
Height difference: +956 up / -214 down

3| El Gaitero – La Caldera
The second stage of the GR131. Step by step you ascend towards the Teide area. The only sound is the sound of your shoes stepping through the stones! You will encounter jumping crickets, buzzing flies, bees and wasps in the grandly scented pine forest. There seems to be no end to it. Then suddenly you come into a Halloween-like forest with beard moss in every tree that looks like fluttering Halloween-like wisps. With fog it would be a perfect setting for a horror movie.
You conquer considerable altimeters and often the views are really spectacularly beautiful. At the end of the day you arrive at La Caldera area. With a shot transfer you will be brought to your accommodation.

Distance: 15 km
Height difference: +655 up / -1183 down

4| La Caldera – Las Canadas del Teide
Ready for a new day. You leave this fine accommodation. But don’t worry, it will be a very nice day. You walk further up to the Teide area.
From the starting point you can already see in the distance where you are going today. The number of kilometers is not that much, but it’s all in the altimeters. You climb up through the forest, until you reach the tree line and walk completely in the sun. With a satisfied feeling you arrive at a mountain restaurant on the Cañadas del Teide where you can drink a delicious pot of beer with a delicious tapa. After you have regained your strength, a transfer will take you to the Parador hotel.

Distance: 16.5 km
Height difference: +1135 up / -260 down

5| Parador – Vilaflor
In the morning, don’t miss the sunrise! A special moment to be able to see this! The highest point has been reached and today we descend to Villaflor. After a last small ascent, you come to a point where you turn around one more time to look at El Teide. You see the hardened lava flows and your mind goes back in time. If you walk further you enter one of the most beautiful varied nature areas of Tenerife where you can only reach on foot. Descending further and further to Vilaflor, we slowly come back below the tree line and walk to the accommodation. Vilaflor is the highest village in Spain, at 1400 meters. You can relax completely in the cozy Spa-Hotel with swimming pool. You will be completely pampered by the owner.

Distance: 24.5 km
Height difference: +495 up / -1156 down

6| Vilaflor – Arona – ferry San Sebastian de La Gomera
The last day of this GR131 on Tenerife has already arrived. From Vilaflor you walk downhill towards Arona. You wind your way down between the pine trees. The tour in Tenerife is complete! From here you will be taken to Los Cristianos to take the ferry to La Gomera this evening. In San Sebastián, the capital and main port of La Gomera, you can stroll around in the evening through a pleasant car-free center with shops and many cozy restaurants and bars. Our residence is located in the center of the park “Torre del Conde”

Distance: 20km
Altitude difference: +668 up / -1391 down

7| San Sebastian – Rest day

8| San Sebastián – Uphill
After the relaxed day of rest, you immediately start again with a first tough stage. From sea level to 940mt altitude. You have to climb a lot, that’s why you don’t make many kilometers this day. When you have arrived at altitude, you can treat yourself to a cooling drink at the restaurant. Afterwards you will be taken back to San Sebastián.

Distance: 9 km
Altitude difference: +1047 up / -96 down

9| The middle mountains (17km)
In the morning, after leaving your accommodation, you will go with a transfer to the place where you ended up. You continue the trip on a very nice part of the GR131 on La Gomera. Don’t forget your camera! We walk to the highest point Alto Garajonay. In clear weather we will see La Palma, El Hierro, Tenerife and maybe Gran Canaria. In the afternoon you arrive in Chipude. A small village with a real mountain hotel.

Distance: 16.6 km
Altitude difference: +848 up / -686 down

10| The beautiful valley (16km)
The first part goes up and down alternately. Until you enter the Garajonay nature reserve in the middle of the island. From then on, the path takes us mostly downhill where we always keep a view of the valley, Vallehermoso, ‘beautiful valley’. After a long descent we arrive at a cozy atmospheric hotel. We have reached the end of the GR131! A short, but one of the most beautiful routes. La Gomera is the perfect walking island for a reason.

Distance: 14.5 km
Altitude difference: +407 up / -1298 down

Program

1, Arrive at Tenerife South Airport.

You will be picked up on arrival at the airport (South). We then drive to La Laguna which is located in the north of Tenerife. It is also possible to fly directly to Tenerife North. We get to know the group while enjoying a drink. You will receive your stainless steel drinking bottle and your hiking scarf here. We spend the night in a nice accommodation, with breakfast. There is a supermarket if you want to take food and drinks for the next day. Do this because the first day is a hard day without encountering a restaurant or supermarket. We depart from La Esperanza.

2, Departure La Esperanza to Presa de Aguamansa – 27 km

From La Esperanza we walk to Aguamansa via the Las Lagunetas nature reserve. Pine forests on the mountain tops, the dizzying crags. Today we ascend to 1748 meters. A spectacular walk up.

3, Departure from Aguamansa Portillo – 17km.

We climb here to above 2000 meters. Because there are no accommodations here, you will be picked up and transported to our location, and then leave from this point again the next day.

4, Portillo to Villaflor – 25 km

After breakfast we leave with plenty of water and eat in our backpack from El Portillo. The first few kilometers are flat, and we see before us the climb we still have to do. This is the final obstacle. After we have reached the top at 2424 meters, a very long descent follows to Villaflor. Walking uphill is pretty tough, but a steep descent is just as tough. In Villaflor there is our accommodation and a restaurant where we can eat and drink. And those who need a wellness can fill the evening with this.

5, Departure from Villaflor to Arona – 15 km

The last leg of this journey is mostly downhill to Arona. The end point of our trip in Tenerife. From here you will be transported to Los Cristianos to have a rest. We stay here an extra day to rest before we leave with the Ferry to La Gomera.

6, Los Cristianos rest day
Have a nice rest. go to the beach or rather on the boulevard?

7, To the Ferry (8km)
Early in the morning our Ferry departs to San Sebastián on the island of La Gomera. We check in at the accommodation and leave our belongings behind. With a daypack we start our first stage on La Gomera.
A decent climb awaits us. We have spectacular views over the Garajonay valley. You will be picked up on the route and taken back to San Sebastian.

8, The second stage of La Gomera (17km)

The second day and also the most beautiful day! Here we pass the highest point Alto de Garajonay. A very varied trip.
We stay in our accommodation Chipude.

9, Downhill to Vallehermoso (16km)
The third day is less arduous because we walk downhill to our final destination Vallehermoso. We walk slowly downhill to an altitude of 200m via the most beautiful valley of the island to the town of Vallehermoso. Also the end point of our journey.
We go with a transfer to the place Valle Gran Rey to spend our last days there.

10 & 11, Valle Gran Rey to Tenerife

Valle Gran Rey is the place where we stay the last days.
Day 11 we go back by ferry to Tenerife in the evening, and have our last night.

12, End of the journey
You will be taken to the airport from the accommodation.
