Description
The GR131 Tenerife
Tenerife, is the fourth island of the GR131. Within 5 days you walk 90 km south in Tenerife, crossing the Teide Natural Park and passing El Teide. With an impressive height of 3718 meters, it is the highest volcano of the islands! La Gomera is the fifth island of the GR131. There you walk 40 km from east to west within 3 days, crossing the Garajonay Natural Park. It is a beautiful hike with a lot of variety. You pass farmlands, forests with conifers, eucalyptus and laurel trees and various lava landscapes. You reach an altitude of 2,425 meters on Tenerife and 1,478 meters on La Gomera, where you hardly meet anyone. The 130 kilometers and the challenging landscape with many altimeters make this a tour for experienced hikers, with sure footedness and a good condition!
The GR131 La Gomera
On La Gomera you will arrive at the port of the small town of San Sebastian. From there you walk up towards the Garajonay Natural Park with a magnificent view of Tenerife with El Teide above the clouds. A special feature of the park is the fog, which is more present in the winter than in the summer. In the center of the park is an ancient laurel forest.
On La Gomera you have the so-called whistling language. The Silbo Gomero (Gomeran flute) is a whistling language “spoken” by some inhabitants of the Canary Island of La Gomera. The language is used to communicate through the deep valleys (barrancos) that are found all over the island.
