Description
NB! Due to the enormous forest fire last summer, three day stages were destroyed and closed to the public until further notice. We therefore have an alternative route that we will use for the time being.
The forest fire destroyed three entire stages. The fire has even reached the lower shrubs above the tree line. Much has been burned on both the north and south sides. The video shows how the fire destroyed everything up to El Portillo. This fire last summer has caused all hiking trails to be completely closed until further notice. This could take two years or more. We therefore have an alternative beautiful route that certainly competes with the GR131!
The GR131 Tenerife is the fourth island of the long-distance route.
We walk the GR131 Camino natural across the island of Tenerife with the Teide (3,715 m) as the highest point. The trek is about 80 km long which we will walk in 5 days. The start is in Santiago del Teide where we start with a circular walk in the Teno Mountains. Once above the tree line we walk with fantastic views, with El Teide always in sight. As a hiker you will visit places that you would otherwise never see. We walk through a very versatile landscape such as pine forest, laurel forest, over the barren plains of El Teide above the tree line, volcanic landscape and limestone. We then descend mainly through forests towards Villaflor to Arona.
We use small-scale authentic mountain hotels.
You reach a height of 2,425 meters on Tenerife and 1,478 meters on La Gomera, where you hardly meet anyone. The 130 kilometers and the challenging landscape with many meters of elevation make this a tour for experienced hikers, with sure steps and good fitness!
The GR131 La Gomera
On La Gomera you arrive at the port of the small town of San Sebastian. From there you walk up towards the Garajonay nature park with a beautiful view of Tenerife with El Teide above the clouds. What is special about the park is the fog, which is more present in the winter period than in the summer period. An ancient laurel forest is located in the center of the park.
On La Gomera you have the so-called whistling language. Silbo Gomero (Gomeran flute) is a whistling language “spoken” by some residents of the Canary Island of La Gomera. The language serves to communicate through the deep valleys (barrancos) that occur throughout the island.
