Description

NB! Due to the enormous forest fire last summer, three day stages were destroyed and closed to the public until further notice. We therefore have an alternative route that we will use for the time being.

The forest fire destroyed three entire stages. The fire has even reached the lower shrubs above the tree line. Much has been burned on both the north and south sides. The video shows how the fire destroyed everything up to El Portillo. This fire last summer has caused all hiking trails to be completely closed until further notice. This could take two years or more. We therefore have an alternative beautiful route that certainly competes with the GR131!

The GR131 Tenerife is the fourth island of the long-distance route.

We walk the GR131 Camino natural across the island of Tenerife with the Teide (3,715 m) as the highest point. The trek is about 80 km long which we will walk in 5 days. The start is in Santiago del Teide where we start with a circular walk in the Teno Mountains. Once above the tree line we walk with fantastic views, with El Teide always in sight. As a hiker you will visit places that you would otherwise never see. We walk through a very versatile landscape such as pine forest, laurel forest, over the barren plains of El Teide above the tree line, volcanic landscape and limestone. We then descend mainly through forests towards Villaflor to Arona.
We use small-scale authentic mountain hotels.

You reach a height of 2,425 meters on Tenerife and 1,478 meters on La Gomera, where you hardly meet anyone. The 130 kilometers and the challenging landscape with many meters of elevation make this a tour for experienced hikers, with sure steps and good fitness!

The GR131 La Gomera

On La Gomera you arrive at the port of the small town of San Sebastian. From there you walk up towards the Garajonay nature park with a beautiful view of Tenerife with El Teide above the clouds. What is special about the park is the fog, which is more present in the winter period than in the summer period. An ancient laurel forest is located in the center of the park.
On La Gomera you have the so-called whistling language. Silbo Gomero (Gomeran flute) is a whistling language “spoken” by some residents of the Canary Island of La Gomera. The language serves to communicate through the deep valleys (barrancos) that occur throughout the island.

The 12-day trip consists of carefully selected accommodations, based on a double room, usually with a private bathroom, with breakfast. Of course there is the possibility to get a single room for a surcharge.

  • Trek along special views
  • Maximum 8 people
  • Alto de Jarajonay
  • Special valleys
  • Special overnight stays
  • Hiking island par excellence
  • The flute on La Gomera
  • El Teide
  • Away from the crowd

2| Walk Teno
The first stage of the GR131 has a total distance of 11 km. This route is not too difficult. A gradually ascending road, towards the Masca valley, with spectacular views. A nice day trip to acclimatize.

Distance: 10 km
Elevation difference: +480 up / – 480 down

3| Santiago del Teide – Chinero volcano
The second stage of this tour we walk to Chinero volcano. Step by step you walk towards the Teide area. The only sound is the sound of your shoes stepping through the stones! We walk to a unique accommodation in the middle of this volcanic area.

Distance: 16.6 km
Elevation difference: +660 up / – 420 down

4| Los Llanos – Parking El Teide
Ready for a new day. You leave this nice accommodation. But don’t worry, it will be a very nice day. You walk  further up to the Teide area. From the starting point you can see in the distance where you are going today. We walk a long hike with some elevation gain. You climb up through the forest until you reach the tree line.

Distance: 21 km
Elevation difference: +960 up / – 70 down

5| Village in the mountains (16km)
As we walk further we enter one of the most beautiful varied nature reserves in Tenerife, El Teide, where we walk through the most beautiful parts. A part where you can only reach on foot. Descending further and further to Vilaflor, we slowly reach the tree line again and walk to the accommodation. Vilaflor is the highest village in Spain at 1400 meters. We stay in the oldest hotel in Vilaflor.

Distance: 18 km
Elevation difference: +470 up / – 1200 down

6| Downhill (19km)
The last day of this GR131 has already arrived. From Vilaflor we walk downhill towards Arona. We wind our way down between the pine trees. The journey is completed! We take the boat to La Gomera

Distance: 19 km
Elevation difference: +491 up / – 1388 down

7| San Sebastián – Rest day

8| San Sebastián – Uphill
After the relaxing rest day you immediately start again with a first tough stage. From sea level to 940m altitude. You have to climb a lot, which is why you don’t cover many kilometers this day. Once you reach altitude, you can treat yourself to a cooling drink at the restaurant. Then you will be taken back to San Sebastián.

Distance: 9 km
Elevation: +1047 up / – 96 down

9| The middle mountains (17km)
In the morning, after leaving your accommodation, you will be transferred to the place where you ended. You continue the tour on a very beautiful part of the GR131 on La Gomera. Don’t forget your camera! We walk to the highest point Alto Garajonay. In clear weather we will see La Palma, El Hierro, Tenerife and perhaps Gran Canaria. In the afternoon you arrive in Chipude. A small village with a real mountain hotel.

Distance: 16.6 km
Elevation: +848 up / – 686 down

10| The beautiful valley (16km)
The first part alternates up and down. Until you enter the Garajonay nature reserve in the center of the island. From then on the path takes us largely downhill where we always keep a view of the valley, Vallehermoso, ‘beautiful valley’. After a long descent we arrive at a cozy hotel. We have reached the end point of the GR131! A short, but one of the most beautiful routes. It is not without reason that La Gomera is the perfect hiking island.

Distance: 14.5 km
Elevation: +407 up / – 1298 down

Additional information

Program

1, Arrive at Tenerife South Airport.

You will be picked up on arrival at the airport (South). We then drive to La Laguna which is located in the north of Tenerife. It is also possible to fly directly to Tenerife North. We get to know the group while enjoying a drink. You will receive your stainless steel drinking bottle and your hiking scarf here. We spend the night in a nice accommodation, with breakfast. There is a supermarket if you want to take food and drinks for the next day. Do this because the first day is a hard day without encountering a restaurant or supermarket. We depart from La Esperanza.

2, Departure La Esperanza to Presa de Aguamansa – 27 km

From La Esperanza we walk to Aguamansa via the Las Lagunetas nature reserve. Pine forests on the mountain tops, the dizzying crags. Today we ascend to 1748 meters. A spectacular walk up.

3, Departure from Aguamansa Portillo – 17km.

We climb here to above 2000 meters. Because there are no accommodations here, you will be picked up and transported to our location, and then leave from this point again the next day.

4, Portillo to Villaflor – 25 km

After breakfast we leave with plenty of water and eat in our backpack from El Portillo. The first few kilometers are flat, and we see before us the climb we still have to do. This is the final obstacle. After we have reached the top at 2424 meters, a very long descent follows to Villaflor. Walking uphill is pretty tough, but a steep descent is just as tough. In Villaflor there is our accommodation and a restaurant where we can eat and drink. And those who need a wellness can fill the evening with this.

5, Departure from Villaflor to Arona – 15 km

The last leg of this journey is mostly downhill to Arona. The end point of our trip in Tenerife. From here you will be transported to Los Cristianos to have a rest. We stay here an extra day to rest before we leave with the Ferry to La Gomera.

6, Los Cristianos rest day
Have a nice rest. go to the beach or rather on the boulevard?

7, To the Ferry (8km)
Early in the morning our Ferry departs to San Sebastián on the island of La Gomera. We check in at the accommodation and leave our belongings behind. With a daypack we start our first stage on La Gomera.
A decent climb awaits us. We have spectacular views over the Garajonay valley. You will be picked up on the route and taken back to San Sebastian.

8, The second stage of La Gomera (17km)

The second day and also the most beautiful day! Here we pass the highest point Alto de Garajonay. A very varied trip.
We stay in our accommodation Chipude.

9, Downhill to Vallehermoso (16km)
The third day is less arduous because we walk downhill to our final destination Vallehermoso. We walk slowly downhill to an altitude of 200m via the most beautiful valley of the island to the town of Vallehermoso. Also the end point of our journey.
We go with a transfer to the place Valle Gran Rey to spend our last days there.

10 & 11, Valle Gran Rey to Tenerife

Valle Gran Rey is the place where we stay the last days.
Day 11 we go back by ferry to Tenerife in the evening, and have our last night.

12, End of the journey
You will be taken to the airport from the accommodation.

Information about the return journey
If you have booked the 12-day trip, you will be dropped off at the airport. There is a possibility to fly back from La Gomera. If you want to stay a few extra days, there is a bus connection from Los Cristianos to Tenerife South Airport. Of course you can also take a taxi.
