The GR131 Fuerteventura is the second island of the long-distance route.
After Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is the second island and also the longest of the GR131. From North to South you cover a distance of 160 km.
Fuerteventura is completely different from Lanzarote. An island that mainly has the beige colors and azure white beaches. An island with many secrets and beautiful stories.
What will we see when we walk across this beautiful island? The first is the small wonderful island of Los Lobos, where exactly 4 inhabitants are registered according to the municipality. The first two days we walk fairly flat to the center of the island, the Betancuria mountains! Here you feel small in this large piece of nature. This trek of 160 kilometers we walk in 8 days from north to south Fuerteventura. The tour is not extremely difficult but does require fitness; every day we walk an average of 20 kilometers on unpaved paths with more or less altimeters in desolate and rough landscapes.
- Trek up to 8 people
- Walking through desolate landscapes
- Between the old volcanoes
- Special overnight stays in Casas Rurales
- White beaches with azure sea
- Beautiful villages
1| Arrival in Corralejo
You can fly (depending on your preference and the flight price) to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. If you fly to Lanzarote, you can travel from the airport by bus to Playa Blanca in the far south. From here you take the ferry to Corralejo on the northern tip of Fuerteventura. You will be met at the port. If you fly directly to Fuerteventura, we will be waiting at the airport to take you to the accommodation in Corralejo.
2| Departure to Los Lobos – 8km
We leave by boat for the first leg of the walk to the island of Los Lobos.
We arrive by boat in a beautiful bay at the “Casas del Puertito”.
This is where the 8 kilometer walk to the north starts. At the northern cape of the island, the lighthouse’s viewing platform offers stunning views of three islands: Los Lobos, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

3| Depart Corralejo for La Oliva
We leave to the south and pass some volcanic craters. When we look back towards Corralejo at some height, we have a beautiful view of Lanzarote and Los Lobos. We pass the village of Lajares and take a short break there. This first stage is fairly flat, but the sandy surface makes walking quite difficult. Our destination today is La Oliva, a place with history. After arrival we can relax at the accommodation or visit the village. There is a terrace and a small supermarket for the necessary refreshments.
Height difference: +423 up /- 205 down
4| La Oliva to Tefia
After breakfast we set off for this relatively short stage towards Tefia. The silence of the island and not meeting anyone will have already been noticed. Away from tourism and completely in the nature of the island. We pass through the village of Tindaya, which lies at the foot of an almost 400 meter high volcano. This mountain was sacred to the Old Canarians. Even now there are still many legends, but the mountain is protected and can only be visited to a limited extent. We take a break in a local bar and continue our way south.
We spend the night in a rural accommodation full of peace and atmosphere where you will witness a fantastic sunset while enjoying a delicious dinner.
Height difference: +230 up /- 242 down
5| Tefia to Betancuria
Climbing starts today. After Valle de Santa Inés we really go up steeply. At the top we arrive at a viewpoint with two giant statues, the “Estatuas de Guise y Ayose”. The bronze statues of 4.5 meters high depict the two Guanche kings Guise and Ayose, rulers of Fuerteventura from the distant past. When we descend the “Montaña Tegú” on the other side, we see the white buildings of Betancuria in a lovely green valley. This beautiful place owes its name to the conquistador Béthencourt. We go to the oldest accommodation of this tour, which is full of history.
Height difference: +493 up /- 290 down
6| Betancuria to Pajara
Today is a tough day with big climbs, but with great views. We leave Betancuria and immediately walk to the highest point of the day. We pass through valleys where silence reigns. The only sound you hear are the birds of prey flying over the valleys. A piece of nature that you will never forget from this island. The climbs make this a tough trip.
After the break we continue our path to climb further. Once at the top we have special and spectacular views over the Betancuria Mountains. After descending about 7 kilometers, we reach our final destination for today: Pájara.
Elevation difference: +505 up /- 698 down
7| Pajara to La Pared
Today is probably the toughest stage. We leave from Pájara and soon see the mountains looming in front of us. This is the most beautiful area of Fuerteventura. You feel one with nature here. The silence sometimes hurts your ears, but in one word: beautiful! Breathtaking views to both coasts of the island await you. On a clear day you can even see the peak of Mount Teíde on the neighboring island of Tenerife on the western horizon!
After a last grueling climb, we gradually descend towards La Pared, today’s final destination, with a beautiful view of the west coast. Here we stay in a luxury hotel with wonderful beds and a swimming pool. For those who are not yet tired enough, there are sports facilities. There is a supermarket at the hotel. The possibility to eat here in the evening is available. A huge breakfast buffet is included.
Elevation difference: +683 up /- 846 down
8| La Pared to Costa Calma
Today we leave early for Costa Calma. Immediately south of La Pared, the landscape changes strikingly. Leaving the mountains behind us, we now walk through a kind of rolling desert landscape. Compared to the past few days a pretty flat trip.
At the narrowest part of the island we cross over to the east coast towards Costa Calma. A popular place for surfers because of the favorable wind that blows here all year round.
Height difference: +212 up /- 220 down
9| Free day Costa Calma
Costa Calma is a cozy not too big tourist resort. The sun worshiper can relax by the pool or by the sea. Those who want to keep moving can enjoy themselves on the kilometre-long sandy beach. In the evening there is plenty of choice of restaurants and bars.
10| Costa Calma to Morro Jable
The last two days of the trek we mostly walk south along the beach. Today we walk to Morro Jable, where we will spend the next two nights. Morro Jable still has the atmosphere of a former fishing village, but it has now merged with the very touristy Jandia next door. There is plenty of shopping here. You stumble across the souvenir shops and terraces. However, the promenade in the old Morro Jable is very atmospheric and a table right on the water can always be found with some luck and patience. We stay in a nice accommodation with a swimming pool.
Height difference: +139 up /- 123 down
11| Morro Jable to Punto de Jandia
The last leg of our trek is on the program. A trip to the very southern tip of Fuerteventura: the lighthouse on “Punto de Jandia”. Still a lot of up and down, which makes this trip quite difficult. You can see the lighthouse from afar, making it seem like you’re almost there, but looks can be deceiving. The road continues along the coast.
After we have reached the end point with the group and have taken the necessary photos, we return to the small village to relax in the modest restaurant. Here we are picked up by a van and brought back to Morro Jable over an endless unpaved road. Nice if we can look back on an unforgettable hike in the evening, while enjoying a drink!
Height difference: +267 up /- 259 down
