Lanzarote, with its volcanic and lush landscapes, is the perfect starting point for your GR131 adventure. The route takes you from the rugged north to the sunny south of the island, covering an average of 15 kilometers a day along well-maintained, unpaved paths. Along the way, you’ll pass iconic landmarks such as the Corona Volcano and the highest point of Lanzarote, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the coastline, lava fields, and vineyards.

1 | Arrival and Start of the GR131 Lanzarote – Welcome to Órzola!
Upon landing on Lanzarote, your adventure begins. Our transfer will be waiting to take you to the charming fishing village of Órzola, located at the northern tip of the island.
You’ll stay in a simple yet comfortable accommodation, perfect for unwinding after your journey. In the evening, enjoy a meal at one of the cozy harbor-side restaurants, with views of bobbing boats and the setting sun.
Need supplies for your first hiking day? Órzola has a supermarket where you can stock up on snacks, water, or breakfast items for the road.
2 | From Órzola to Haría – Hiking Through Lanzarote’s Green North
Today marks the start of your hiking adventure! Leaving the coast of Órzola behind, you’ll venture into Lanzarote’s greener and slightly cooler northern region.
The trail winds through mountainous terrain towards Haría, offering breathtaking views of numerous volcanic peaks.You’ll pass through the charming village of Máguez, a sleepy locale filled with whitewashed houses and traditional Canarian architecture – a place where time seems to stand still.
Your day concludes in Haría, a picturesque village known as the “Valley of a Thousand Palms.” This was also the home of César Manrique, the renowned artist and architect who helped shape Lanzarote’s landscape. His former residence is now a unique museum, well worth a visit if you have the energy.

3 | From Haría to Teguise – Reaching Lanzarote’s Highest Point
Today’s stage is a highlight! You’ll ascend to the island’s highest point: Peñas del Chache. It’s a challenging climb, but the expansive views over the rugged northwest coast and the Famara massif make it worthwhile.
The trail follows mountain ridges, past jagged rocks, and paths that gradually lead you closer to Lanzarote’s heart. Here, you can feel the power of the volcanic landscape and the tranquility it exudes.
Descending into Teguise, once the island’s capital, you’ll find a town rich in character. With its plazas, churches, and colonial ambiance, it’s a delightful place to relax. You’ll spend the night in a charming accommodation in the historic center – a well-deserved reward after an adventurous day.

4 | From Teguise to San Bartolomé – Walking Through the Island’s Heart
Today, you’ll traverse Lanzarote’s rural heartland. Departing from Teguise, you’ll head south through open landscapes dotted with white houses scattered across the hills. This area was once the island’s agricultural hub – the granary of Lanzarote.
The route is relatively flat and peaceful, allowing you to fully appreciate the surroundings. You might spot a farmer tending the land or a group of goats seeking shade. The simplicity of the landscape offers a meditative experience.
By midday, you’ll arrive in San Bartolomé, a small town with a relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect time to stop by a local bakery for a fresh sandwich or a delicious pastry before heading to your accommodation.

Today is yours to spend as you wish. Whether you prefer to relax or explore, the options are plentiful.
Wine enthusiasts can opt for an optional wine tasting experience. Sample the unique wines cultivated in Lanzarote’s volcanic soil – a true treat for your taste buds!
Interested in César Manrique’s work? This is the perfect opportunity to visit his extraordinary home-turned-museum. His vision of harmony between humans, art, and nature remains palpable throughout the island.
6 | On the Way to Yaiza – Between Volcanoes and Vineyards
Today’s stage is demanding but often considered the most beautiful. From San Bartolomé, you’ll hike through the impressive volcanic landscape towards the island’s south.
You’ll soon pass through the village of Montaña Blanca, named after the prominent mountain that towers over the landscape. On clear days, you might even glimpse the neighboring island of Fuerteventura!
After La Asomada, the scenery changes dramatically. You’ll enter the unique wine region of La Geria, where thousands of grapevines grow in volcanic pits, shielded from the wind by semicircular lava stone walls. It’s a sight unlike any other in the world.
In the distance, the red-hued peaks of the Timanfaya mountains emerge. And who knows… you might even encounter a few camels along the old camel trail as you continue to the tranquil village of Yaiza.

7 | From Yaiza to Playa Blanca – The Final Stretch
Today, you’ll cover the last kilometers of this remarkable trek – a day characterized by rugged terrain. Leaving Yaiza, you’ll traverse rocky paths towards Las Breñas, with the trail undulating over stones and pebbles, offering increasing views of Lanzarote’s southern coast. To your right, the distinctive salt flats of Salinas de Janubio come into view.

8 | Heading Home with a Backpack Full of Memories
After an adventurous and varied journey across the island, you’ll be transferred to Arrecife Airport on your final day. It’s time to say goodbye to Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes, sweeping views, and peaceful atmosphere. Hopefully, you’re returning home with a head full of beautiful moments and a backpack full of stories.

With a group tour you get this at the end of the trip. With an individual trip you take a stamp ticket with you that you have signed off at various locations. How long does the journey take?
The hike is easy to do for experienced hikers with a normal level of fitness. You walk an average of 15 to 20 kilometers per day on unpaved paths with slight elevation changes. The surface is sometimes stony or sandy, but technically not difficult. Lanzarote is the first and easiest island.
How long does the journey take?
The walking tour lasts 8 days in total, including arrival and departure day. You walk for 5 days, with a rest day to catch your breath or explore the island further.
What kind of landscapes will I encounter?
Lanzarote has a unique volcanic landscape with craters, lava fields and black sand plains. Along the way you walk past vineyards, old villages and impressive nature reserves. Every day offers a different decor.
Are there enough places to buy food and drinks along the way?
Not always. Some stages go through remote areas, so it is important to bring enough water and snacks. We give advice on provisioning possibilities per day.
Is luggage transport included?
Yes, your luggage will be transported for you daily. You will only walk with a light daypack and can enjoy the route without any worries.
Where do I stay during the tour?
You will stay in small-scale and atmospheric accommodations such as casas rurales, guesthouses and local hotels. Often with a personal atmosphere, away from the masses. Arriving in Playa Blanca you will stay in a hotel with a swimming pool.
What should I bring?
Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes, a good daypack, sun protection, a refillable water bottle and light clothing suitable for warm, dry conditions.
What is the best time to travel?
The GR131 can be walked all year round, but the most pleasant period is from October to April. Lanzarote has a mild and dry climate with lots of sun. The temperature in winter is around 18–22°C and in summer between 25–30°C. Do take into account the wind, which often blows strongly on the island.
Can I also book this trip alone?
Yes, this trip is specially designed for individual hikers. Everything is arranged for you, but you walk at your own pace. Of course it is also possible to book with a partner or walking buddy.
Is the route marked?
The GR131 is well marked on Lanzarote with red and white stripes. You will also receive a route booklet and GPX files for your phone or GPS.
Because the route is sometimes adjusted, we advise you to use the enclosed GPX files.
