Teno to Mount Teide: Trekking Through Western Tenerife
The Teno to Mount Teide Challenging trek is an 8-day trekking holiday of approximately 85 kilometres through western and central Tenerife. The route starts in Santiago del Teide and takes you through the rugged landscapes of Teno, the volcanic fields around Chinyero and the mountain forests before reaching the high-altitude plains of Teide National Park.
The trek begins in Santiago del Teide with a circular hike towards the famous mountain village of Masca. The route then continues through the volcanic landscape around Chinyero, where the 1909 eruption is still clearly visible in the terrain.
The landscape changes continuously during the following stages. You hike through pine and laurel forests, along old mountain paths and across volcanic terrain. As you gain altitude, the vegetation gradually disappears and you reach the open highlands of the Teide area. Here you walk through a striking landscape of lava, volcanic rock formations and wide mountain plains.
After the high-altitude section, you descend through mountain forests towards Vilaflor and eventually Arona. Along the way, the landscape changes once again and views towards the south of Tenerife gradually open up.
What makes this trek so special?

Hiking level
This trek is suitable for experienced hikers with a good level of fitness. You hike approximately 17 kilometres per day on average, with significant elevation changes along the route.

Hiking to Alto de Guajara
One of the legends of the National Park is Guajara, a Guanche princess who, after losing her darling Tinguaro in the Battle of Aguere, rose to the top and, after a long wandering, threw herself into the void of the walls of Guajara.
The walk leads to 2700 meters above sea level and offers what is considered by many people the best viewpoint for seeing Spain’s highest mountain, Teide.
Explanation of excursion:
The trail continues south until a marked trail is found that climbs the Alto de Guajara mountain. At the summit it is possible to see the remains of the various astronomical observatories placed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the first astronomical observatory on high mountains created by Piazzl Smyth. He demonstrates Isaac Newton’s theories on the benefits of observation from great heights. Therefore, this place is perfect for watching the dark sky at night.
