Wandelpad GR131 op La Gomera

1 | Arrival at Tenerife South Airport and Transfer to La Gomera
Upon arrival in Tenerife, we’ll be there to greet you. Together we head to the ferry terminal for the crossing to San Sebastián de La Gomera — the island’s historic capital.

2 | Uphill: The Start of Your Adventure
The first stage of the GR131 kicks off with a challenging climb! This tough start is a great way to get into hiking mode. The trail winds upward — not many kilometers, but plenty of elevation gain. Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with stunning views and a well-earned refreshment at a cozy restaurant. After soaking it all in, we return by comfortable transfer to San Sebastián to rest up for the next stage.

Distance: 9 km
Elevation: +1047 m / –96 m

3 | The Mid-Mountains: Degollada de Peraza to Chipude
We begin with a transfer back to where we left off. This section of the GR131 takes us through one of La Gomera’s most scenic areas. As we ascend gradually, we approach Alto Garajonay — the island’s highest peak — located in the heart of Garajonay National Park, known for its ancient laurel forests and mystical mist. From the top, enjoy sweeping views of the island’s lush interior. We arrive in Chipude by mid-afternoon.

Distance: 16.6 km
Elevation: +848 m / –686 m

4 | The Beautiful Valley
Today’s hike takes us through the breathtaking Vallehermoso Valley, the impressive endpoint of the GR131 on La Gomera. The landscape gets greener as we approach the valley, surrounded by mountains and rich in natural beauty. Near the edge of the valley, we pass the tranquil Presa de la Cabezita reservoir — a perfect spot to pause and take in the scenery.
We continue past fertile fields and traditional terraces before arriving in Vallehermoso.

Distance: 14.5 km
Elevation: +407 m / –1298 m

5 | The Coast (Vallehermoso – Hermigua)
From Vallehermoso, we head toward the coast — but first, we climb up to 800 meters! Throughout the hike, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of Tenerife and the towering Teide volcano. It’s a demanding walk, but you’ll finish the day in a welcoming, comfortable hotel.

Distance: 17 km
Elevation: +810 m / –910 m

6 | Last but Not Least (Hermigua – San Sebastián)
This final stage is no less impressive. We climb once more before descending into San Sebastián. Take in the last views and enjoy the satisfaction of completing a challenging hike across a stunning island.

Distance: 17.5 km
Elevation: +770 m / –900 m

7 | Island-Hopping: From La Gomera to El Hierro
Today we leave La Gomera behind and begin a new chapter: El Hierro, the most remote and mysterious of the Canary Islands.
We first take the ferry back to Tenerife, where we pause briefly before boarding the second ferry to El Hierro. Guests joining only for the El Hierro leg will meet us at Los Cristianos port.
This transition day offers a moment to relax and enjoy the sea views while preparing for the next part of our hiking adventure. Upon arrival, you’ll immediately notice the change in atmosphere: quieter, greener, and even less touristy. We settle into our new accommodation and end the day with dinner.

Note: Those only doing the La Gomera portion will be transferred to Tenerife Airport.

8 | Departure from Valverde to Los Llanos
After a hearty breakfast, we start directly from Valverde, the island’s capital. We leave the town via peaceful paths and gradually head inland. The climb is gentle and suitable for anyone with a basic level of fitness.
The landscape surprises with its greenery — rolling meadows, rugged hedgerows, misty pine forests… it feels like walking through the Scottish Highlands. Far from mass tourism, we experience the island’s quiet beauty at its finest.
After around 15 km, we reach La Llanía, in the heart of a protected natural area, known for its mysterious cloud forests. Our transfer will pick us up here and take us back to our accommodation.

Distance: 15 km
Elevation: +871 m / –247 m

9 | Aparcamiento de La Llanía to Valverde – 15 km
Today we hike the final stage of the GR131 on El Hierro — a day full of symbolism. From La Llanía, we first descend to the church of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, for centuries the spiritual and cultural heart of the island.
This marks the official end of the Camino de la Virgen, a historic pilgrimage route — but our journey isn’t over yet.
We continue through a wild volcanic landscape to El Hierro’s — and Europe’s — westernmost point: the Faro de Orchilla lighthouse. Once believed to be the end of the world, it’s a place filled with silence and symbolism.

Distance: 21 km
Elevation: +141 m / –874 m

10 | A Scenic Walk to the Twisted Tree
After the intense GR131 stages, today we slow the pace — but our journey of discovery continues. From the western village of La Sabinosa, we take a relaxed yet striking circular hike through El Hierro’s unique landscape.
The goal? The iconic El Sabinar: wind-bent juniper trees shaped into surreal forms by the constant trade winds. These haunting trees are a symbol of the island’s resilience — and a must-see for anyone who wants to truly understand El Hierro.

11 | Return to Tenerife
After days of impressions and miles on foot, the morning is yours. Sleep in, enjoy a quiet breakfast, or take a final stroll — it’s your time to spend as you wish.
Around midday, we head to the harbor for our return ferry to Tenerife. It’s a relaxed journey, with time to chat, share photos, or quietly reflect on the adventure.
Once in Los Cristianos, we check into our final accommodation.

12 | Journey Home
After one last breakfast in Los Cristianos, we say goodbye to the Canary Islands. Depending on your flight time, you might squeeze in a short beach walk or a coffee with an ocean view.
Then it’s time to head to the airport for your flight home — backpacks full of memories, fresh energy, and maybe a touch of longing for the tranquility of La Gomera and El Hierro.

De GR131 is een uitdagende trektocht, ideaal voor wandelaars met ervaring. De route bevat aanzienlijke hoogteverschillen en sommige etappes zijn behoorlijk pittig. Yes! The GR131 on La Gomera & El Hierro does not have narrow ridges or dangerous precipices. The paths are wide and easy to walk. There is a stage on La Gomera with a significant descent.

What kind of accommodations do you use?

We stay in small-scale, atmospheric accommodations — think of authentic casa rurales with character and comfort and small, atmospheric hotels.

What hiking gear should I bring?

A good daypack, hiking boots with tread, rain gear and sun protection are essential. Use layers!

Do I have to carry my own luggage during the trek?

No, you only walk with a daypack. Your main luggage is transported for you between accommodations.

The climate is generally mild, but in exceptionally bad weather we will flexibly adjust the program. Safety and comfort are paramount.

Where does the group meet?

The group meets at Tenerife South Airport (TFS). Here our guide will be waiting for the participants, usually at the arrivals hall, at an agreed time.
From there we will travel together by transfer to the ferry and cross over to La Gomera, where the trip officially starts.

Tip: Book a flight that we suggest, so that you are sure to be on time for the joint transfer and ferry.

4, The last leg of this GR131
Today the first part goes up and down alternately. Until we enter the Garajonay nature reserve in the middle of the island. From then on, the trail takes us mostly downhill. A short GR131 but one of the most beautiful routes. La Gomera is the perfect walking island for a reason.
