Fuerteventura: An Active Self-Drive Holiday
During this 12-day individual self-drive holiday, you discover Fuerteventura from north to south. You combine hiking with special activities and stay in different parts of the island. From the rugged west coast and historic Betancuria to the beaches of Costa Calma and the mountainous south, every few days you discover a different side of Fuerteventura.
Your journey begins in El Cotillo, on the quiet west coast. From here, you explore the surrounding area on foot and can take part in a special horse-riding activity. You then drive to historic Betancuria, where you hike through the protected mountain landscape and discover more about the history of Fuerteventura.
Next, you travel to La Pared on the wild west coast. Here, the focus is on nature, relaxation and special activities. In the south, you explore Cofete and Pico de la Zarza, at 807 metres the highest point of Fuerteventura. You hike towards Cofete and discover one of the island’s most impressive coastal areas. This is followed by the climb to Pico de la Zarza, with wide views across the southern coast.
During the final days, you explore the central part of Fuerteventura. You hike to Caldera de Gairía, visit historic sites and finish your journey in Los Molinos, one of the greener areas of the island. Along the way, you stay in small-scale accommodations, a comfortable luxury hotel and atmospheric casas rurales.

Day 1
After arriving on Fuerteventura you go to El Cotillo with your rental car. This coastal town has not yet been discovered by mass tourism. It is a pleasant town with an old harbour, rugged cliffs and beaches where mainly the “locals” come. We have a small-scale accommodation in store for you with a swimming pool.
Day 2
Today you will discover El Cotillo. Nice cozy shops and terraces. There is a hidden labyrinth in this area. You will receive the coordinates from us! A great way to really make contact with this environment is with horses.
In the evening you can enjoy the amazing sunset on horseback, because that’s what this place is known for! For a delicious fish dish you will receive restaurant tips from us.
Day 3
On to Betancuria! A place with a rich history. It is a place that is visited by many, but nevertheless it radiates tranquility. Most people only come and leave for a while, but you stay here in an accommodation that exudes just as much atmosphere and tranquility as the village itself! During a walk, which you will receive from us, you will get to know the rugged mountainous environment; A protected natural area!
Day 4
In the morning you drive to Ajuy. The first Spanish rulers set foot on this spot. It is also a place where Fuerteventura initially originated, about 20 million years ago! Then you drive via a winding mountain road to Vega de Rio Palmas. From here you walk to a particularly scenic gorge. This is where the myth of the island’s patron saint originated. Back in Vega de Rio Palmas we have a culinary tip in a green oasis, and you drive back to Betancuria.
Day 5
Today you can set the navigation to the relatively unknown La Pared, on the pure wild west coast. A day to relax in a comfortable luxury hotel with swimming pool near the sea. If you want, we can recommend a walk, but we can imagine that you just want to rest today.
Day 6
You will find that you can really relax in this place. We have an activity for you to match; walking with goats or along rough coasts & Legends (with guide), and then enjoy yourself again at this beautiful location.
Day 7
Today you walk in a circular walk to the other side of the island; to Costa Calma. Here you will find what the name promises you; peace! The sea here is calmer than on the west coast. Relax on this beautiful coast so that you are fit enough to walk back to La Pared.
Day 8
Two great activities are planned for the next two days and you will again stay in a luxury resort. First you go to Cofete. You make the way there on foot. Once over the ridge you see the rugged west coast again, but this time with an endless beach. You may be able to tour the mystical Villa Winter associated with the Hitler regime and there is an equally mysterious graveyard. What is especially a Must-See is the beach with the wild coastline. Take into account that you drive back to Costa Calma with a 4 x 4 wheel drive van. (Own cost)
Day 9
The literal highlight of this trip; Pico de la Zarza. The walk is not particularly difficult, but the view is magnificent. From the top you can look 800 meters directly down to the coastline. In clear weather you can see a large part of the island. And then after the walk… relax with your feet in the sand in one of the many beach bars!
Day 10
Today you drive back in time towards the historic town of Tuineje. There is the volcano ‘Caldera de Gairia’ that you will climb. History can be seen everywhere and to finish the day you drive to Pozo Negro to the “Town of Atalyaita”.
Our last accommodation is a nice Casa Rural in the town of Casillas del Ángel.
Day 11
Your last day is all about green. The island has few green spots. Los Molinos is one of those places. You walk through a river bed with flowing waters, twittering birds and lots of greenery. In the spring, this past area is associated with nesting birds.
Day 12
We hope that you enjoyed this tour that crossed the island and that you return home with a satisfied feeling. If you want to spend extra days on this beautiful surprising island, you can extend your trip. We help you with this.
