What Is Island Hopping?

Island hopping means visiting several Canary Islands during one hiking holiday. Instead of exploring just one island, you combine different islands and spend several days hiking on each of them. The islands are relatively close to one another, but they differ considerably in landscape and character. This means that during one trip, for example, you can combine the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote with the mountains of La Gomera or the green hiking areas of La Palma. At Canary-Hiking, we put together island-hopping hiking holidays where the different parts of the trip fit together smoothly. We arrange the accommodation, hiking routes and the necessary transfers and ferry crossings.

Several Islands in One Trip

What is island hopping? It can include two islands, but you can also combine several islands during one trip. Which islands work well together depends on the time available, the distances you would like to hike and the type of landscape you want to discover. For example, you could choose a combination of Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, or opt for a longer hiking holiday that combines several islands.

Hiking on Each Island

On each island, you hike several stages. You do not have to limit yourself to the best-known hiking routes. Instead, a trip can be put together to match your interests and hiking experience. One island may focus more on volcanic landscapes and coastal areas, while another offers more elevation changes and mountainous routes. By combining several islands, you get a good impression of the differences between the Canary Islands.

Travelling Between the Islands

You will usually travel between the islands by ferry. On some routes, a domestic flight may also be an option. How you travel from one island to another depends on the combination you choose. We include the necessary crossings and connecting transfers in the organisation of your hiking holiday. This means you do not have to work out for yourself how to get from one hiking destination to the next.

From One Accommodation to the Next

During an island-hopping hiking holiday, not only the island changes, but also your accommodation. When luggage transfer is included in your trip, we make sure that your main luggage is transported to the next destination. This means that while travelling and hiking, you only have to carry the luggage you need. The practical arrangements vary from one trip to another and will therefore always be clearly stated in your travel proposal.

How Long Does an Island-Hopping Hiking Holiday Take?

There is no fixed length for an island-hopping hiking holiday. You can combine several islands in around a week and a half, but you can also take a longer hiking holiday lasting several weeks. The more islands you add, the more time you need for travelling between them. That is why, when putting together a trip, we look not only at the number of islands but also at how much time you actually want to spend hiking.

Who Is Island Hopping Suitable For?

Island hopping is ideal for hikers who want to discover several islands and experience different landscapes during one trip. It is also a good choice if you have already hiked on one of the Canary Islands and now want to see more of the archipelago. Because the trip consists of several different parts, it is important to take the travel time between the islands into account.

Independent Island Hopping

The island-hopping hiking holidays offered by Canary-Hiking can be undertaken independently and without a guide. You hike your stages using the route information and GPX and decide your own walking pace. The accommodation and logistics between the different destinations are arranged in advance. This gives you the freedom of independent hiking combined with the convenience of an organised trip.

Can You Choose Which Islands You Visit?

This depends on the trip you choose. We have several combinations already put together, but we can also look at a trip that better matches your wishes. If you mainly want to hike in the mountains, for example, we would make different choices than if you are particularly interested in volcanic landscapes and coastal paths. The number of days you have available is also an important factor.

Our Practical Tip

What Is Island Hopping? It is not just about visiting as many islands as possible. Two islands with enough time to hike can be a better choice than four islands where most of the time is spent travelling. Think about the number of hiking days, the landscapes you want to see and the amount of travel between islands. Canary-Hiking can help you choose a combination that works well.
