Hiking Tips for a Successful Canary-Hiking Trip

A well-prepared hiking holiday starts with the right equipment, technique, and attention to safety. Canary-Hiking offers practical tips so you can enjoy the trails on the Canary Islands with confidence.

Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking shoes with quality socks and bring a 20–30 litre daypack for water, snacks, and sun protection. Trekking poles can provide extra support, especially on steeper trails. Dress in layers to easily adapt to changing weather and don’t forget a hat or cap for sun protection.

Maintain a steady pace and take regular short breaks to avoid fatigue. Use Komoot, GPX files, and the Canary-Hiking travel app for navigation. Bring a small first-aid kit, drink plenty of water, and allow time to acclimatize.

Hiking tips:

Equipment

Always wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or trail runners suitable for the terrain. Choose quality hiking socks to prevent blisters. Use a comfortable daypack of 20–30 litres for water, snacks, a rain jacket, and sun protection. Trekking poles can provide extra support, especially on steep trails or longer distances. Dress in layers to easily adapt to temperature and wind, and don’t forget a hat or cap for sun protection.

Hiking technics

Maintain a steady pace that matches your fitness level. This helps conserve energy and prevents strain on muscles and joints. A consistent pace is especially important on longer hikes or steep terrain.

Take regular short breaks of 5–10 minutes to drink, have a snack, and stretch your muscles. This helps you stay fit longer and prevents fatigue.

Trekking poles can make a big difference. They support you when ascending or descending, reduce pressure on knees and ankles, and help maintain balance on narrow or rocky paths. Using poles makes it easier to keep a steady pace, even on more challenging terrain.

For navigation, use Komoot, GPX files, and the Canary-Hiking travel app. This allows you to follow the routes safely and plan your own pace and breaks, fully tailored to your hiking rhythm.

Safety & Health

Safety and health are essential for an enjoyable hiking holiday. Maintain good fitness to sustain a steady pace and prevent muscle fatigue. Always carry a small first-aid kit with plasters, disinfectant, painkillers, and any personal medication. This allows you to handle minor issues and be prepared for unexpected situations.

Upon arrival, it’s wise to plan 1–2 days for acclimatization. This helps your body adjust to the climate, temperature changes, and any elevation differences, especially in mountainous areas.

Protect yourself from the sun with high-SPF sunscreen, a hat or cap, and sunglasses. Drink enough water regularly to avoid dehydration, even during shorter hikes.

Always monitor the weather forecast. In case of alerts or sudden weather changes, some trails may be temporarily closed. Canary-Hiking will contact you and suggest alternative routes so you can continue hiking safely.

With these measures, you are well prepared for a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable hiking experience on the Canary Islands.
