Which Walking Shoes Do I Need?

Walking shoes for hiking are one of the most important parts of your hiking gear. During a hiking holiday, you often walk for several hours a day and encounter different types of terrain and changes in elevation. The best walking shoe is not the same for everyone. The terrain, the length of the walks and your personal preference all play a role in choosing the right shoe for you.

Choosing the Right Walking Shoes for Hiking

Comfort is more important than the brand or type of shoe. Walking shoes should fit well without feeling tight or putting pressure on any part of your foot. Make sure there is enough room around your toes. During a longer descent, your feet may slide slightly forward. If your shoes are too small, this can cause pressure points or sore toes. It is best to try on walking shoes at the end of the day. Your feet can swell slightly after several hours of walking. When trying them on, also wear the walking socks you plan to use during your hiking holiday.

Low-Cut or High-Cut Walking Shoes?

For many hiking routes in the Canary Islands, low-cut walking shoes or sturdy walking shoes are perfectly suitable. They are relatively lightweight and provide enough grip for many hiking routes. Higher-cut walking shoes provide more support around the ankle and can be useful when walking on rougher terrain or if you are used to wearing high-cut shoes. There is therefore no single type of shoe that is necessary for every hiking holiday. Focus on the route and on what feels comfortable for you.

Pay Attention to Grip

Good grip is important when walking over loose stones, rocky paths or volcanic terrain. Shoes with a good tread provide more confidence on uneven or slippery sections. You will especially notice the difference during descents between shoes with sufficient grip and shoes with a relatively smooth sole.

Are Trail Running Shoes Suitable?

For some hiking holidays, trail running shoes can be a good choice. They are lightweight, flexible and often provide good grip. Whether they are suitable depends on the hiking route and your own experience. On longer routes with significant elevation changes or rougher terrain, a sturdier walking shoe may provide more support. So don’t choose a lightweight shoe simply because it feels comfortable. Also consider the terrain you will be walking on.

Break in Your Shoes Before Your Trip

You should always try out new walking shoes before your hiking holiday. Don’t wear them for the first time on your trip. Start with shorter walks and gradually increase the distance. This gives you time to find out whether the shoes pinch, slip or cause pressure points. Your socks also play a role. Good walking socks help wick away moisture and can reduce friction.

Walking Shoes in Warm Weather

In the Canary Islands, you may encounter high temperatures while hiking. A breathable shoe can be more comfortable in these conditions. Keep in mind, however, that a lightweight and well-ventilated shoe generally offers less protection against loose stones than a sturdier walking shoe. Choose a shoe that suits the combination of temperature, terrain and the hiking holiday you are taking. You can also read our tips on hiking in warm weather.

Walking Shoes for Different Islands

The right shoe also depends on the island and the route. On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, for example, you will often walk on volcanic and open terrain. On La Gomera, Tenerife and La Palma, you are more likely to encounter greater elevation changes and mountainous paths. Always check the information for the specific hiking holiday before choosing your shoes.

Consider Taking a Second Pair

When you are hiking for several days in a row, a second pair of shoes can be useful. This can be especially helpful if your feet are sensitive or if you like having the option to switch between two different pairs. A second pair is not necessary, however. If you have one well-fitting, broken-in pair, you can easily use those shoes throughout your hiking holiday.

Our Practical Tip

It is better to invest in one pair of good, comfortable walking shoes than in a pair that mainly looks suitable because it appears sturdy or technical. Test your shoes on longer walks beforehand and wear the same socks you plan to use during your hiking holiday. This way, you will know before you leave whether your shoes are genuinely comfortable.
