Camino Santiago de Tenerife

What is the history of the Camino de Santiago de Tenerife?
There is little information about this Camino and it seems to date from the time of St. James in 1496. The story goes that nine Guanche kings converted to Christianity in Los Realejos.
The original route runs from Los Realejos to Santiago del Teide to Puerto de Santiago. The La Lecheras route, which starts in Santa Cruz, was added later.

The Camino Santiago Tenerife is an unofficial pilgrimage route that runs for 115 km along the northern side of the volcanic island.
You will receive a detailed description of this pilgrimage route from us.

  • Trekking along special views
  • Walk through the ancient forests
  • Camino Santiago
  • Stamp card
  • Spend the night in hostels & inns
  • 115 kilometers in 6 days

1| Arrival Tenerife

Transfer from the airport to the first accommodation in Santa Cruz on Tenerife, where you will stay for one night.

2| From city to city
The route starts on the east coast at Santa Cruz and runs through the west side to Puerto Santiago.
This little-known camino has no official papal approval, unlike the nearby Camino de Gran Canaria, and as a result few people walk the route. Stage number 1 starts in Santa Cruz and goes to the nice town of La Laguna. A nice start to this pilgrimage.

The start is Church of Our Lady of the Conception, Santa Cruz
The location of the church is no coincidence. This one was chosen because it was close to the beach where the Spaniards landed in the 14th century and held the first mass.
The trail begins by following a ravine inland for a few hundred meters to one of the oldest bridges in the city.

Distance: 16 km
Height difference: +884 up / -335 down

3| Spotting planes
The second leg of the camino between San Cristóbal and La Esperanza is short, unattractive and almost 100% runaway. That said, it’s not unpleasant and offers plenty of opportunity to watch the planes land and take off as you walk along the western edge of the airport towards La Esperanza.

Distance: 12.2 km
Height difference: +374 up / -10 down

4| The long trail
This is one of the longest stretches of the camino, so you should set out as early as possible after sunrise and make sure you bring enough food and drink for the whole day. Along the way you will not come across any catering facilities to eat or drink something. It is quite up and down to walk from La Esperanza to La Caldera.

Distance: 32 km
Height difference: +2474 up / -2206 down

5| Off to Los Realejos
This is a deceptive stage that looks easy at first, but is a killer for your knees, thighs and calf muscles! Although only a short distance compared to the previous day, the steep descent of 1000 meters is hard work for the legs!
There are plenty of beautiful views along the route as the forest thins out.

Distance: 16 km
Height difference: +600 up / -1365 down

6| Mirador de la Corano
This is the longest and most strenuous of all 6 stages and you will have to start walking at first light to reach Los Llanos before dark.
The route starts with a brutally steep one hour climb up from Los Realejos to the viewpoint of Mirador de La Corona. The first part of the climb zigzags along minor roads before emerging onto a steep footpath that heads straight up the hill. However, the view from the top over Puerto de La Cruz and the la Orotava valley makes the climb worthwhile, as long as the weather is good.

Distance: 35 km
Height difference: +1870 up / -1135 down

7| Downhill
Compared to the heavy walking of the last 5 days, the last day is an absolute breeze. The route heads almost all the way downhill, gently descending along an arid valley, each new view surpassing the last, saving the breathtaking cliffs of Los Gigantes for last.
The trail begins to wind through the village of San José and then through a pleasant pine forest before descending to the village of Santiago del Teide. The end point of this unknown journey.

Distance: 16 km
Height difference: +201 up / -1295 down

8| End of this beautiful walking tour
A transfer takes you to the airport. If you want to stay longer, we can arrange that for you.
