The GR131 Gran Canaria is the third island of the long distance route.
Gran Canaria is a unique addition to the GR131, a route it was not originally part of. Yet this rugged island was added later, and the markings on the route are now also present. From the northwest to the south you walk over 85 kilometers, divided into 5 stages. Along the way you will stay in carefully selected accommodations; atmospheric places such as old fincas, cave houses, and casas rurales, far from mass tourism.
What makes Gran Canaria so special? This island offers an abundance of nature, breathtaking views, the Tamadaba nature reserve and the coffee valley in the northwest. The north is quiet and humid, while the south is known for its dry, touristy appearance. Gran Canaria is characterized by large differences in altitude, with a total of 1736 altitude meters. Every day you walk an average of 15 kilometers on unpaved paths, so good walking fitness is indispensable.

2| Departure Puerto de las Nieves to Artenara
From the port you leave for Artenara via the Tamada nature reserve. An area that has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. You will see the fabulous natural indigenous Canarian pine forests on the mountain tops, the dizzying steep cliffs of the almost inaccessible coast and the rich biodiversity of the ravines. Today you ascend to 1300 meters. The first 8 km go to 1200 meters. A spectacular walk up to Artenara. Artenara is a small mountain village. Here you will find several cave houses that have been inhabited to this day and the chapel built in a cave in honor of the Virgen de la Cuevita. You will stay in a cave with a view over the middle point of Gran Canaria. This is a unique experience! Be surprised.

The journey to your nice Hostel with the most fantastic view goes via Tejeda, where there are many food and drink options. Lots of forest and a change in weather. Once over the top, the clouds remain on the north side and you enter a different climate. This is not always, but often!

4| Tejeda extra hike or restday
Tejeda has been declared one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. That’s why you get two nights here. You can use the extra day as a walking day or you can use this day as a rest day. We will give you an extra walking route to explore the most beautiful area.

5| Departure from Tejeda to San Bartolomé de Tirajana
You continue to the highest point of this trek. The town of Cruz de la Tejeda is on the route, where you can take a break. The most beautiful part of the tour of Gran Canaria. The change in weather, the sheep walking everywhere, the silence, and the spectacular views. A tough journey but a very beautiful one! Once you reach the top, the descent to San Bartolomé de Tirajana begins. From 1700 meters to 900 meters. Overnight stay in a Casa Rural in the middle of Tunte.
