The GR131 Gran canaria is part of the long distance route.
Gran Canaria is a strange duck on the GR131. Originally it does not belong to the GR131. The markings are therefore missing here. Gran Canaria was added later, so you walk it without markings, and from Northeast to South you cover a distance of 73 km.
On Gran Canaria the real difference in height starts and it is necessary to have a good walking condition. The total height is 1736 m.
What is Gran Canaria? An island with a lot of nature, beautiful views, the Tamadaba nature reserve, and the valley of the coffee plantations in the east. The tourist area is located in the south, where it is more uncertain than the north, where regular clouds cling to the mountains.
We hike about 70 km from northwest to south in 4 days. This tour does require some fitness; every day we walk an average of 15 kilometers on unpaved paths with more or less altitude meters in desolate and rough landscapes.
The accommodations on are carefully chosen; on the route, small-scale and atmospheric. We spend the night in old fincas and casas rurales, far away from mass tourism.

1, Arrival in Las Palmas
You will be picked up by us on arrival at the airport. We then drive to Agaete which is located on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. We get to know the group while enjoying a drink. You get your shirt and your hiking scarf here. We spend the night in a nice accommodation, with breakfast. There is a supermarket if you want to take food and drinks for the next day. Do this because the first day is a hard day without encountering a restaurant or supermarket. We leave from the fishing village of Puerto de las Nieves.
2, Departure from Puerto de las Nieves to Artenara – 20 km
From the harbor we leave for Artenara via the Tamada nature reserve. An area that has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. You will see the fabulous natural native Canarian pine forests on the mountaintops, the dizzying crags of the almost inaccessible coast and the rich biodiversity of the canyons. Today we ascend to 1300 meters. The first 8 km go to 1200 meters. A spectacular walk up, to walk towards Artenara. Artenara is a small mountain village. Here you will find several cave dwellings inhabited to date and the chapel built in a cave in honor of the Virgen de la Cuevita. We will stay in a cave with a view over the middle point of Gran Canaria. This is a unique experience! Let you surprise yourselves.
3, Departure from Artenara to San Bartolomé de Tirajana – 21km
We continue to the highest point of the tour. The town of Tejeda is on the route, where we can take a break.
4, Departure San Bartolomé de Tirajana to Ayagaures – 15 km
After breakfast we leave San Bartolomé with enough water and food in our backpack. The first few kilometers are calm, and we see the climb we still have to do. This is the final obstacle. After we have reached the top, there is a very long descent to Ayagaures. Walking uphill is pretty tough, but a steep descent is just as tough. Short hairpin bends, overgrown small paths, crumbled stones from a rock wall, so we descend 800 meters until we see the large reservoir of Ayagaures. Here is our accommodation and a restaurant where we can eat and drink.
5, Departure to Ayagaures to Maspalomas – 18 km
The last leg of this journey is mostly downhill to Maspalomas. On the way we have a nice view of the large park Palmitos. A long descending road, with some more activity along the way, we pass small villages where we can eat and drink, before descending further to Maspalomas. The end point of this route is at the lighthouse, in Maspalomas in the middle of the bustling tourism. Here awaits a nice accommodation where we can stay for another 2 days and relax.
