Description
The Three Gems: La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro
Island hopping across the three smaller, lesser-known Canary Islands offers a striking contrast to the more famous islands like Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, or Fuerteventura.
La Gomera – a smaller, wilder Gran Canaria
La Gomera is rugged and diverse, with several microclimates. Villages are generally built in terraces along the mountainsides. The island’s highlight is the Garajonay National Park, with Alto de Garajonay as its highest point, offering panoramic views over ancient forests and valleys. Walking trails dominate the landscape. Unique to La Gomera is El Silbo, a whistled language that allowed valley inhabitants to communicate over long distances. Today, many locals still use this fascinating language.
La Palma – a paradise for hikers
La Palma surprises every visitor. Its newest volcano adds a dramatic touch to a hiker’s paradise: from volcanic craters to lush valleys, breathtaking landscapes await. Known as the second steepest island in the world after Hawaii, La Palma offers trails for both adventurous and more relaxed walkers. We guide you along the most beautiful routes so you can discover all the diverse highlights of this island.
El Hierro – the authentic island
El Hierro gets its name from the rusty-colored coast, noticed by early sailors. The smallest and westernmost Canary Island, it is often called Europe’s “hidden corner.” The island retains its authentic charm, untouched by mass tourism. Weather on El Hierro is extremely varied: in the south, La Restinga can be 30°C while just 10 km away it is cloudy, windy, and rainy. Its landscapes include volcanic plains, juniper forests, pine woods, and rugged terrain.
The island’s natural pools are a must-see, with beautifully constructed wooden piers and stairs into the deep blue sea. El Hierro is also a religious island, famous for La Bajada festival. The Camino de la Virgen, a pilgrimage walked by much of the local population, is a central part of island life.
